The Chicago Cubs are the sports world’s loveable losers.  They’re the team that everyone roots for because of their consistent futility, it’s been over 100 years since they won a World Series.  The last time they were in the playoffs, well it was going so well until a lazy foul ball down the left field line.

Harry CarayI root for the Cubs, but am not a Cubs fan.  One of the highlights of my younger life was hearing Wayne Messmer sing the National Anthem and announce a Cubs game while Harry Caray sang, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and seeing Ryne Sandberg hit a home run.  Years later, I would see his nephew break a team record for home runs in a season.

But this is about Andrew Belleson who, only five years ago, was one in 3,000.  Today, he’s one of 10.  One of 10 P. A. announcers whose team is in the post season.

Though the Cubs travel to Pittsburgh for their play-in game tomorrow, Belleson reflects back on the process that’s gotten him one win away from announcing in Major League Baseball’s post season.

And no matter who you’re rooting for, you know, in the back of your mind, you’re rooting for the Cubs to win.
