The National Anthem is performed prior to the start of most sports contests. The guidelines and announcements in this post can help you regardless of the country in which you’re announcing. The keys to remember are directing fans attention to the performer or flag, reminding fans to remain at attention until the colors have been retired should you have a color or honor guard, and to not make more out of the National Anthem than need be.
The keys to remember are directing attention to the flag or the performer. If neither, choose a central location for all to direct their attention.
You will notice that none of the announcements include wording about respect for the flag, removing hats, etc. because you’re an announcer, not a teacher in this instance. People don’t want to feel lectured to before watching a sports event.
Without A Performer:
“Ladies and gentlemen, at this time we ask that you all please rise and direct your attention to the [American/Canadian/etc.] flag, located [give the location*] for the playing of our National Anthem.”
*give the location using obvious landmarks such as, “at the Cavaliers end of the gym” or “above the Predators goal”.
With A Performer:
“Ladies and gentlemen, at this time we ask that you all please rise and direct your attention to [give location*] and please welcome [insert name here] who will sing/perform our National Anthem.”
Multiple Anthems Without A Performer:
“Ladies and gentlemen, at this time we ask that you all please rise and direct your attention to the [American/Canadian/etc.] flag, located [give the location*] for the playing of the O Canada, and the Star Spangled Banner.”
Always play the National Anthem(s) of any visiting countries first, and then the National Anthem of the home team. If you have two teams from outside of your country, you can play the National Anthems of both teams, and then the National Anthem of the host country.
Multiple Anthems With A Performer:
“Ladies and gentlemen, at this time we ask that you all please rise and direct your attention to [give location*] and please welcome [insert name here] who will sing/perform the O Canada, and the Star Spangled Banner.”
Multiple Anthems With Different Performers:
“Ladies and gentlemen, at this time we ask that you all please rise and direct your attention to [give location*] and please welcome [insert name here] who will sing/perform O Canada.”
Following the first National Anthem:
“And now ladies and gentlemen, we ask that you please remain standing and direct your attention to [give location*] and please welcome [insert name here] who will sing/perform the Star Spangled Banner.”

February 11, 2025, 1:43 pmIs it appropriate to play "America the Beautiful" during the presentation of the colors as they did for the SuperBowl and not the national anthem?
Is it appropriate for the riflemen in the color guard to present arms when "America the Beautiful" is played?
I think there is something rotten in Denmark.

July 18, 2025, 1:31 pmThis has a lot of layers to it and I’ll try to get to each one. Television and how they want to present the show take over. Then you have the person who is actually choreographing the show and anyone that’s above them giving their feedback. So you have a lot of people involved, and they all want to put on the best show possible. It is appropriate to play patriotic music or a music bed for the presentation of the colors as long as the commander of the color/honor guard has given their blessing which can have its own lines of red tape involved. Since I wasn’t at the game itself, I’m not sure if the music was played in stadium or if it was just on television. With technology you can do a lot of that on the fly. Heck, you can send one music track to TV and a second music track to stadium.

June 17, 2025, 9:20 amShould the person performing the Anthem face the crowd (at a ballgame) or the flag?

July 18, 2025, 1:28 pmIt really depends on the situation and how everything is lined up. When the anthem is to be performed on TV, the performer will always face the camera regardless of the location of the fans. However, when singing the National Anthem, I have always had my singers face the flag, or stand adjacent to a color guard, or in some situations, have them stand in front of the color guard as the flags are held above the performer.
