Bill Bergstrom Still Announcing at Worcester State

Some will argue nothing has changed in Central Massachusetts since the 1980’s, and they would be right when it comes to Bill Bergstrom who has called every play for the Worcester State Lancers since the program elevated to varsity status in 1985, though he’d already been at it for almost 20 years at Bartlett High

A member of the Hall of Fame at Bartlett, Bergstrom has gone through all the trials and tribulations a P. A. announcer these days can only imagine.  He started his college football announcing career on a platform atop wooden bleachers with an amplifier around his legs, a microphone in his hand, and the sky above him.  When it rained, students would be assigned to hold an umbrella over him.

He is also his own spotter.  Something that a lot announcers these days feel they can’t be without.  While it is difficult to do, Bergstrom does his homework early by becoming familiar with the backs and receivers before the game even starts.  He’ll handle tackles as they happen and he can catch them.
