Word out of Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park is that their long-time track announcer Russell Dowd has announced his retirement. He was the track’s voice for over 30 years and has spent 46 years behind the microphone.
Dowd’s voice was a mainstay in New England racing and beyond as he announced at five other tracks, bringing the thrill of the Saturday night race to the fans.
Dowd’s retirement does not mean that he will disappear from the Thompson scene. He will continue to provide assistance to his administrative successor to make for a smooth transition. Fans can also expect to see him on some race days and he might even make an occasional guest appearance on the track’s PA system.
Thank you to fellow announcer Kip Childress for sending this along to us.
